Celebrating and Caring for the Land

…Dust to Dust…

At the end of their lives, depending on the circumstances of their passing, our wild neighbors begin a process of decomposition that is amazing and ecologically important. Soft tissues are the first to go being easily consumed by predators, scavengers and molecular break down. A mammals hair can decompose in a few years but in the right conditions can last hundreds of years. Bones can also either break down in a couple decades or last for hundreds or thousands of years if the conditions are right.

“I consider nature a vast chemical laboratory in which all kinds of composition and decompositions are formed.” -Antoine Lavoisier
