White Feathers

Feathers are made of keratin, which is naturally colorless and transparent. Keratin fibers or “foam” scatter all wavelengths of the visible spectrum and the resulting “color” is white. Some people believe white feathers provide evolutionary advantage in camouflage, communication and temperature control, others maintain that white, or lack of pigmentation, is simply the default.
