Celebrating and Caring for the Land

Oak Apples

These large spherical growths found on oaks in the white oak sub-group are formed when the parasitic wasp Andricus californicus deposits an egg in the stem tissue which triggers the tree to produce the gall. While the developing wasp larva grows inside the gall it may be parasitized by other insects (hyperparasites) and both may be predated by other vertebrates like birds or mice.
