Pacific Spiketail

With its striking blue-green eyes and black and yellow body, the Pacific Spiketail (Cordulegaster dorsalis) is the only member of its family (Cordulegastridae) found in California. This formidable and fearsome hunter, also known as the “flying adder” is renowned for commonly catching and devouring Yellowjackets, they also tend to favor headwaters where their aquatic nymphs may spend up to 5 years prowling the muds of upstream creeks.
