Melica torreyana, seen here with its stamens and stigmas immodestly hanging out in the wind, is a native perennial bunchgrass, endemic to the Coast Ranges and Sierra foothills of California. This sweet little clumper can be found on a variety of soil types and shady locations and is known to serve as host plant for Skipper butterflies and Sphinx moths.
