A small island of nectar in an otherwise seasonally dry landscape attracts several species of wasps. By September, paper wasp and Yellowjacket colonies have grown to peak size and demand for nectar is high. Fennel offers its nectar on an umbel of easily accessible shallow glands, which the short-faced wasps appreciate (butterflies and honeybees are able to reach deeper into other flowers for nectar).
