Breeding Newts – Amplexus

Amplexus is latin for “embrace”, males compete to be the ones to embrace the females and be in position to fertilize her eggs when they are laid. When the females are ready, the males deposit a spermatophore that is taken up by the females and utilized when she lays her eggs in jelly-like masses often attached to aquatic vegetation.
