There are at least 9 species of mantid in California, some native and some introduced. With 5 eyes (2 large compound eyes and 3 simple ocelli) and a head that can uniquely rotate 18o degrees, they are the only known insect with true 3D stereoscopic vision. Mantids also have a single ear-like auditory organ on the underside of their belly which allows them to detect ultrasonic bat calls.
