The blue elderberry (Sambucus nigra) produces a compound cluster (cyme) of dark purple drupes, these berry-like fruit can be covered in a frosty natural wax coating called a “bloom” which helps prevent moisture loss, repels water and blocks pests. The raw fruit contains cyanogenic glycosides and can cause nausea and vomiting if consumed but these compounds break down when cooked or processed making for some yummy things like jam, syrup or wine.
