As a pool’s water slowly evaporates, there is less dissolved oxygen available and more concentrated salts and minerals making it harder for aquatic species to survive. The water column diminishes and gets warmer as algae blooms and organic muck is broken down by microbes and bacteria. Creatures either move to another pool, produce desiccation-resistant eggs or cysts or parish and become food for scavengers.
