Subterranean Termites

On Sunny days after the first rains of autumn, winged-reproductive termites (called “alates”) emerge from the earth to fly off in search of freshly moistened deadwood to begin a new colony. Thought to have evolved over 200 million years ago, termites are considered among the most ancient of social organisms living in organized colonies with a division of labor shared between workers, soldiers and reproductive “kings” and “queens”.
