Spotted Spreadwing Copulation

Lestes conger, like others in their Order, perform a “heart” or “wheel” formation during reproduction. After a nuptial tandem flight, the pair alights and contort their long abdomens to facilitate the passing of a sperm packet, the male will often stay attached, for defense, while the female lays eggs in or on aquatic vegetation.
