The earliest gastropods in the fossil record emerged around 500 million years ago, since then they’ve evolved into nearly 100,000 species worldwide. Slugs are snails that evolutionarily lost their shells over time and many slugs still have a vestigial internal shell structure. There are over 250 species of snails and slugs in California.
