Asclepius speciosa is one of 15 species of Milkweeds in California and over 100 species in North America. Milkweeds are an important pollinator plant for many insects and famously host-plant for the Monarch butterfly. Most milkweeds produce a toxic, milky, latex sap which monarch larvae are able to store in their tissues and use as a deterrent to predation.
