Celebrating and Caring for the Land

Serpentine Ecology

Soils composed of weathered Serpentinite contain high levels of heavy metals: chromium, iron, cobalt and nickel and low levels of other essential nutrients including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These soils are known for three main traits: poor plant productivity, high rates of endemism and vegetation types that are distinct from neighboring sites. Many of the best remaining native plant dominated areas can be found on Serpentine soils.
