Celebrating and Caring for the Land

Romulea rosea

Guildford Grass, Onion Grass, Rosy Sandcrocus…all common names for this South African import that is increasingly found along roadsides in Sonoma County. Having spread widely in the first few decades since it was discovered in Northern California, it’s small stature and attractive unobtrusive habit belies it’s slow and steady spread. In addition to it’s competitive pressure on native flora, its tough leathery leaf blades are also known to cause “fiber-balls” in cattle which can impede healthy digestion.
