Residual Dry Matter – RDM

Fire and grazing allow for rapid nutrient cycling in grasslands, without those disturbances there is a build-up and layering of RDM, senescent phytomass or “thatch”. This left-over material can negatively impact species diversity and affect soil chemistry.
