Purple Fuzz Fungus

Punctularia atropurpurascens, also known as “Violet Crust Fungus” can be found feeding on decaying hardwoods like this chunk of oak. The purplish-violet color comes from natural pigments, like melanin, which may serve to protect the fungus from UV radiation.
