Celebrating and Caring for the Land

Predaceous Ground Beetles

Ground Beetles, in the family Carabidae, have over 2,500 species in N. America and 800 in California. These fast moving terrestrial hunters cruise through the leaf litter for caterpillars and other insects. After rains moisten the soil, breeding adults can be found searching in tandem for adequate locations to lay their eggs.
