Powder Down Preening

While many birds produce and use oils from glands to maintain their feathers, egrets are one of the few kinds of birds who utilize the waxy talc-like powder produced by disintegrating powder down feathers. Made of keratin, this dusty powder helps keep their plumage clean and functional by lubricating the feathers and absorbing oils and dirt…important when you live and work in shallow muddy waters.
