Poppy Eaters

Blister beetles, family Meloidae, are known to consume California poppy flowers which contain chemical alkaloids that make them undesirable to most other herbivores. The beetles not only tolerate the toxins, they are able to utilize those compounds in their own chemical defenses against potential predators.

    I seen golden crowned sparrows munching preferentially on those petals, trying to git they babies to do it, too, but them chillens sometimes look disgusted.
