Point Reyes Elk and Cattle

The Tule Elk (Cervus canadensis nannodes) nearly went extinct in the 1860s which is about the same time dairy ranching arose on what is now the Point Reyes National Seashore. Over the ensuing century and a half there would be a growing debate around the conflicting needs of elk and cattle and in January 2025 a deal was reached to end much of the ranching in the park.
