Plantago erecta

California plantain, Dotseed plantain or foothill plantain…this small statured native annual germinates early in the rainy season and as a “drought avoider” runs its life cycle quickly, releasing seeds before hot dry summers set in. It’s known to be the host plant for rare checkerspot butterflies and its translucent petaled flowers are pollenated by various small insects.
