Charina bottae, also known as the “Coastal Rubber Boa” is the most northerly of all Boa species and can be found hunting a number of small creatures in the leaf litter and under rocks and logs throughout the western U.S. When disturbed, they ball-up into a knot, hiding their head while leaving their tails (that look like a head) exposed to deceive any attackers. Their small eyes also have vertically elliptical pupils (like members of the viper family) which is uncommon among snakes.
