Newt Breath

This California Newt was on the move and breathing hard in its exertion. The lung mechanics of large salamanders have been studied to help understand the evolutionary details of how those first land-going vertebrates adapted. They use a two-stroke breathing technique involving the tightening of their “transverse abdominis” muscles and the pumping of their “buccal cavity” (oral cavity).
