Mourning Cloak Caterpillars

Also known as the Spiny Elm Caterpillar, the larvae of Nymphalis antiopa sports unmistakable spikes and highly contrasting black, red and white to warn anyone who might want to mess with it. Urticating spines are like tiny glass needles holding a dose of irritant that can cause a painful stinging sensation.
