Mourning Cloak

Found throughout North America and Eurasia, it’s one of the longest lived butterflies, adults can live almost a full year. Their name derives from a resemblance to the dark cloaks worn to funeral services…note the petticoat showing at the edges.
The other side of their wings camouflage nicely with tree bark, where they hide and rest.
