Found throughout North America and Eurasia, it’s one of the longest lived butterflies, adults can live almost a full year. Their name derives from a resemblance to the dark cloaks worn to funeral services…note the petticoat showing at the edges.The other side of their wings camouflage nicely with tree bark, where they hide and rest.
