Midge Mating Swarms

Playing a huge ecological role in aquatic ecosystems worldwide, adult midges gather in large swarms to mate and lay eggs in nearby bodies of freshwater. Midges are an important food source for many other animals, their larvae are a favorite of fish and waterfowl while the adults are a critical food source for birds, bats and spiders.
