Horntail Wasps

Female “Wood Wasps” or “Sawflies” use their antenna to seek out dead or dying conifers where they’ll use their characteristic “horntail” to lay eggs in wood. Their ovipositors have an interlocking double valve system with backward facing teeth that allows them to easily “drill” an inch deep where their larva will nibble away until fully grown.
