Celebrating and Caring for the Land

Honeybee Microwaves

Another in the series “Honeybees in peril”. While insects in this position often end up as fish food, this one made it to some vegetation and happily flew away. Like most all flying insects, a bee’s wings are powered by rapid rhythmic pulsations of the thorax. They can beat their wings over 200 times per second, we’re seeing the tiny wave action caused by those pulsations. Note how its cute fuzziness keeps it from breaking the surface tension and getting wet. (Click image for larger versions)
