…or “Adventitious Shoots” are a way for this Live Oak tree (Quercus agrifolia) to produce new growth from the side of the trunk. After an injury, the remaining portion of the tree can “dedifferentiate” certain cells to begin producing new branches where there weren’t branches before. New oak leaves may first appear mostly red from their high levels of anthocyanin which deters insects and protects from excess light. Oaks are crafty! Click image for larger version
