Eating Walnuts

Once ripeness is assessed and a nut is selected, a squirrel makes quick work of discarding the fleshy outer layer, then there’s a lot of crunching and munching to get through the hard shell to access the meaty insides. Not only are walnuts a favorite food for squirrels, the gnawing action against those tough shells is what helps keep their ever-growing teeth sharpened and at an appropriate length.
