Canis latrans, means “barking dog” and refers to its tendency to be one of the most vocal of all wild North American mammals. A mid-sized highly adaptable predator/scavenger, they can cover many miles a day searching for a broad range of prey animals, carrion, fruits and vegetables. They tend to be most active in the mornings and evenings but this young one was flouncing around at mid-day, perhaps driven by hunger…? Click image for larger version.

I’ve read the Coast Miwok word for coyote is Olema, and the place name is Olemaloke, “coyote valley” and while hiking near there, we’ve seen coyotes playing and hunting.
