“Christmas Berry”

Heteromeles arbutifolia, also known as “Christmas Holly” or more commonly, “Toyon”, is a common perennial shrub found in the coastal scrub from Oregon to Baja. Like many other plants in the Rose family their fruits contain cyanogenic glycosides (cyanide!) but cooking in various ways can mitigate the acidic astringent compounds.
