Cavity Nesting

“Primary cavity nesters” are birds that carve-out or excavate their nesting sites, woodpeckers being the most important woodworkers. “Secondary cavity nesters” make use of existing cavities whether created by woodpeckers or pockets of decaying wood, broken branches or birdhouses. If there are adequate standing dead trees, woodpeckers will create habitat for many other species.
