Batrachoseps attenuatus is a member of the lungless salamander family, Plethodontidae. They are able to respire directly through their skin and the lining in their mouths. They do not need a body of water to lay eggs in like many other salamanders, instead they find a moist protected place where their eggs can safely develop until the newborns emerge looking like tiny versions of their adult relatives.
