Dicamptodon ensatus is a California endemic member of the Ambystomatidae family, one of the largest amphibians on the continent. Like many other salamanders they have 4 toes on their front feet and 5 on the back feet and are one of the few salamanders that are able to vocalize, usually in protest to being hassled.
