Celebrating and Caring for the Land

Cackling Goose

Branta hutchinsii is a cousin of the Canada goose, Branta canadensis, but notably smaller with a shorter bill, shorter neck and a distinctive high pitched cackling call. A Canada goose is in the foreground of the below photo for comparison. They breed along the arctic edge of North America and some come to California to over-winter.
