Bull Elk in Rut

During the fall rut, bull elk experience an exponential increase in testosterone production leading to dramatic physical and behavioral changes. With heightened aggression, the bulls begin to compete with each other, there’s lots of bugling, grunting, scent marking and displaying, velvet is shed from the hardening antlers, the muscles in the neck and upper body swell and increase to help absorb impact during sparring and fighting.
