Buckeye Bud-break

Aesculus Californica, “California Buckeye”, has adapted to the hot, dry summers by dropping its leaves and going dormant. With the return of rains their new buds draw on energy stores and begin to swell until the bud scales burst open and the tiny already formed leaves emerge and begin photosynthesizing.
