Pachydiplax longipennis is a common dragonfly in the Skimmer family found throughout much of North America. They’re known to be aggressive while defending territories and finding mates and orient their bodies in various positions as a way of communicating with each other. The “obelisk posture” is when the abdomen is held straight upwards which may be a threat display or a response to heat and minimizing sun exposure. (Click image for larger version)
