Black Blister Beetle

Epicauta pensylvanica, also known as the “Black Aster Beetle”, was certainly living up to its other name as hundreds of them were busily working these “Tarweeds” which are in the aster family. They produce a toxin called Cantharidin which can cause painful blisters in humans and is also known to cause irritation and even death to livestock that inadvertently consume unwitting beetles.
