Texas Longhorns are a close descendant of the Aurochs, the wild eurasian ox believed to be the primogenitor for modern cattle, first brought to North America in 1493. The ecological niche now occupied by these relative “new cows on the block” used to be filled with a long list of Pleistocene megafauna grazers including mammoths, bison, horses, camels, elk and the first bovine to occupy North America, the shrub-ox or wood-ox.
