Bald Eagles

The Bald Eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, thrived throughout much of California before their numbers plummeted as a result of hunting, habitat loss and DDT poisoning. In 1967 with fewer than 30 nesting pairs in the state they were given federal and state protection which allowed their numbers to rebound to the point where they were removed from the endangered species list and are now considered to be doing very well.
