Pelecanus erythrorhynchos is one of two species of Pelican found along the North Coast. They tend to spend the summer on inland lakes breeding and raising young, then migrate to the coast to spend the autumn and winter. With a wing span over 9 ft, they are one of the largest birds in North America and adept at catching thermals and easily covering many miles while traveling in groups.
