Celebrating and Caring for the Land

Aerenchyma and Hydrophytic Vegetation

Hydrophytic or “water loving” plants have specialized air-filled tissues composed of aerenchyma cells that facilitate a faster transfer of gas exchange between roots and shoots. Aerenchyma or “aeriferous parenchyma” is an adaptation in obligate wetland plants, spongy open spaces within the plant tissues which provide an easier exchange of gasses such as oxygen, carbon dioxide and ethylene.
