A Panting Nuthatch

This White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) is dealing with the heat like most birds – by panting. Unable to sweat they must shed excess heat by evaporative cooling from their respiratory system. Too much panting, though, can lead to dehydration and a need to seek out water sources more often.
