Acorn Woodpeckers live in communal family groups where the young will stick around for some years helping raise the successive young and bank up a family cache of acorns. They spend a lot of time caring for this acorn stash, drilling sockets in dead wood to perfectly fit acorns into, as acorns dry, they shrink and need to be re-positioned to fit each socket lest they fall out.
