Celebrating and Caring for the Land

A Feast on the Hemlock

Conium maculatum, also known as “Poison Hemlock” is the European import famously used in the execution of Socrates. While it can be invasive here in California, it can also provide nourishment to many insects when other pollen and nectar sources are dried up. While nectar is nice, these ladybugs are also taking advantage of a tasty group of aphids. Seems there are times when non-native species can provide valuable services to the rest of the community.
