Oak Flowers

These male oak flowers, called catkins, produce pollen that is carried by the wind to the smaller female flowers (not shown here), which when pollenated become acorns. Oak trees are monoecious, having both male and female flowers on the same tree. New Black Oak leaves already showing their pointy leaf margines (above) vs. the rounded leaf margine of the Gary (White) Oak below and the Coast Live Oak (on the bottom).
